About Prince Alfred Guard
The Prince Alfred's Guard Museum is a military museum in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) housed in the historic Victorian Drill Hall, which dates back to 1880. The building itself is a National Monument and serves as the headquarters for the Chief Maqoma Regiment (formerly Prince Alfred's Guard). Key Exhibits & History The "Miracle Cannon": A perfectly preserved bronze cannon salvaged from the 1647 wreck of the Sacramento. Regimental Relics: A vast collection of medals, uniforms, photographs, and weapons spanning the regiment's history since 1856. Architectural Gem: The Drill Hall is one of the best-surviving Victorian military structures in South Africa, featuring a distinct Edwardian façade.
