About Heron Banks Golf Course

Heron Banks Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-71 links-style championship facility located along a 3-kilometre stretch of the Vaal River in Vaalpark, Sasolburg. Positioned on the border of the Free State and Gauteng provinces, the course was designed by Daniel Obermeyer and spans a total distance of 6,610 metres from the championship tees. The layout integrates natural wetlands, sand bunkers, and Highveld vegetation, incorporating water hazards that come into play on 13 different holes, with the back nine running directly parallel to the river.

The estate serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife, including springbok and indigenous bird species like the Blue Heron. Its permanent facilities feature a central clubhouse, a fully equipped pro shop, a driving range, and dedicated chipping and putting practice greens. Additionally, the course regularly serves as a professional tournament venue, hosting events such as the Sunshine Tour's Mediclinic Invitational, the Free State Open, and Senior Tour Pro-Ams.
