About Soweto Towers
The Soweto Towers, formally known as the Orlando Towers Vertical Adventure Centre, is an iconic adventure tourism destination and historical landmark located in Soweto, Johannesburg. Originally a decommissioned coal-fired power station, these massive structures have been creatively repurposed into an extreme sports park featuring vibrant, hand-painted murals that celebrate South African culture. The facility operates on a first-come, first-served basis from Thursday through Sunday, closing during periods of inclement weather for safety.
Visitors to the site must pay a general ground admission fee to enter the premises, and specific age and weight restrictions are enforced for the high-altitude attractions to ensure participant safety. The adventure centre offers a diverse range of adrenaline-inducing activities, highlighted by a 100-metre bungee jump from a suspension bridge that connects the two cooling towers. Inside the Western Cooling Tower, participants can experience a suspended catch air device (SCAD) freefall, while the exterior of the infrastructure supports activities like vertical rock climbing and a 700-metre zip line that glides over the nearby Orlando Dam. For those seeking a less intense experience, an open-air lift ascends to a 360-degree viewing deck at the top of the tower, providing panoramic views of the surrounding township and the broader Johannesburg skyline.
