Fort Klapperkop is a beautifully preserved 19th-century military fort and provincial heritage site situated on a hill overlooking Pretoria. Completed in January 1898, it was one of four forts built by the South African Republic (ZAR) to defend the capital against potential British raids just before the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Boer War. Military History: Despite its formidable design and armament (which included "Long Tom" cannons), the fort never saw active combat; no shot was ever fired "in anger" from its ramparts. It was occupied by British forces without a fight in June 1900. Museum: Restored in 1963, the fort now serves as a military museum featuring exhibits on the Anglo-Boer War, historical weaponry, and a commemorative statue for fallen soldiers.
