About The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre

The Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, located at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers in Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa, is an award-winning museum and visitor hub. Designed by Peter Rich Architects, it serves to preserve and display the history of the ancient Mapungubwe Kingdom (c. 1000–1300 AD), which was one of Southern Africa’s first major trading civilisations. Ancient Construction: It utilizes a 600-year-old timbrel vaulting technique (Mediterranean in origin) to create 10 free-form, unreinforced masonry vaults. Local Materials: The structure was built using over 200,000 stabilized earth tiles manufactured on-site from local soil.
