About Kommandonek MTB Trails
The Kommandonek MTB Trails, situated within the Kommando Nek Reserve near Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West province, offer an outdoor cycling route set against the backdrop of the Magaliesberg mountain range. The primary trail consists of a 6-kilometre loop categorized by a moderate gradient that features an initial elevation climb, rewarding riders with panoramic viewpoints overlooking the reservoir and nearby cliffs.
Because the trail traverses a private wildlife sanctuary free of large predators, cyclists regularly encounter native plains game roaming the area, such as zebras, blesbok, and wildebeest. The terrain itself is characterized by a blend of natural dirt paths, gravel jeep tracks, and rocky sections, which can shift in texture due to seasonal weather, particularly during hot summer months when intense afternoon thundershowers occur. Additionally, the venue serves as a strategic geographic link for endurance riders looking to connect into the more extensive 150-kilometre Van Gaalen trail network located in the adjacent Skeerpoort valley.
