About Restaurant Klein JAN
Restaurant Klein JAN was a remote fine-dining destination situated within the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in South Africa's Northern Cape. Founded by South Africa’s first Michelin-starred chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the establishment operated for a five-year period before permanently closing in 2026.
The architectural layout featured a multi-stage guest journey that began at Boscia House, a restored 1913 farmhouse before moving down a floating staircase into a 25-metre underground root cellar filled with preserved local ingredients. The final phase of the meal took place in a contemporary dining room featuring expansive glass walls that overlooked the desert landscape. The culinary concept focused on regional heritage, utilizing a traditional coal stove and native Kalahari ingredients to reinterpret South African flavours. Following severe flooding in 2026, the ownership team elected to bring the culinary project to an end.
