The BiSON Sutherland station in South Africa is an automated solar observatory operating as part of the Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network. Established in 1990 at the South African Astronomical Observatory near Sutherland, Northern Cape, the facility uses a specialized resonant scattering spectrometer to monitor global solar oscillations. By recording Doppler shifts across the solar surface, it provides critical data on the Sun's deep internal structure and magnetic core. Working in tandem with five other global stations, its strategic, high-altitude desert location enables near-continuous, 24-hour tracking of solar activity.
