The site is internationally renowned among archaeologists because its exceptionally dry, well-drained sediment layers preserved 6,000-year-old botanical material, making them the oldest well-preserved plant remains in Southern Africa. Location: Situated roughly 80 kilometres north of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) inside a steep, secluded ravine. Geology: Formed from the sandstones of the Cape Supergroup, which weathered over time into protective rock overhangs. Rock Art: The back wall of the cave features ancient rock paintings, though many have faded due to time. Access Restrictions: Permits are required.
