About Suicide Gorge
The Suicide Gorge Hiking Trail in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve is widely considered one of South Africa's most extreme and adrenaline-fuelled "kloofing" (canyoning) experiences. This high-intensity circular route involves an 8km mountain hike followed by a series of mandatory jumps from waterfalls—some as high as 14 metres—into deep rock pools. Season: The trail is strictly seasonal and is only open from 1 November to 30 April each year. Distance & Duration: Expect a roughly 17km circular trek that typically takes between 8 to 12 hours to complete. Permits: A Special Use Kloofing Permit is mandatory. As of the 2025/2026 season, permit fees are approximately R450 per person. Due to high demand, weekend bookings should be made at least a month in advance via CapeNature. Requirements: You must be accompanied by someone who has previous experience on the route or a professional guide.
