About Sunbird Centre
Sunbird Centre, tucked away on Silvermine Road in the lower Silvermine Valley section of the Table Mountain National Park system in Cape Town, serves as a tranquil eco-focused education venue and gateway to scenic nature trails. This unique sanctuary features rustic facility buildings traditionally used as dormitory accommodation for school groups and environmental education workshops. On-site amenities include open grassed parking areas, educational assembly spaces, adjacent picnic spots shaded by mature trees, and direct access to the Silvermine River walk and the 11-kilometre loop trail toward the Silvermine Waterfall. Because the facility sits squarely inside a legally protected, high-biodiversity fynbos reserve, a strict fire safety no-smoking policy applies across the entire area. While the upper mountain trails allow dogs with special permits, the delicate immediate environment surrounding the Sunbird Centre and its lower river paths is designated as not pet-friendly to protect local wildlife, endemic bird breeding grounds, and pristine flora.
