About Fort Frederick
Fort Frederick is a stone fort in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa. Built in 1799, it is the oldest British structure in the Eastern Cape. Origin: Built by British troops to prevent a French landing during the Napoleonic wars. Naming: Named after Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, then Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. Despite its military design, a shot has never been fired in anger from its walls. Location: Belmont Terrace
