About Anglo Boer War Fort Jansenville

The Jansenville Fort is a stone blockhouse built in 1901 by the British during the Second Anglo-Boer War. Located on a hill at the northern end of Jansenville, Eastern Cape, it served as a defensive post for the town guard. Purpose and Construction: Built to protect the town from Boer commandos, the fort features sophisticated stonemasonry typically associated with Royal Engineers. Military Action: The fort itself saw very little direct combat during the war. However, the surrounding district was active; notably, the Battle of Blaaukrantz occurred 20 km north on 21 March 1901, where a Boer commando clashed with British forces. Location: It is clearly visible on the hill to the west of the R75 road as you enter the town from the north.
