About Anglo Boer War Memorial Aberdeen

The Anglo Boer War Memorial in Aberdeen is located inside the historical Aberdeen Cemetery along Meintjies Street in the Eastern Cape. It stands as a poignant historical tribute commemorating the soldiers who lost their lives in the surrounding district during the conflict between 1899 and 1902. British Remembrance: The main memorial honors the 25 British officers, non-commissioned officers, and men who perished in action within the Aberdeen district. Their graves are clearly numbered for historical tracing. Boer Casualties: The cemetery also features a dedicated section with graves for 4 members of the Boer forces. This includes a monument to the first Boer guerrilla soldier executed by the British for wearing a British military uniform during active combat. Local Context: The war split the town heavily, with 139 local Aberdeen residents rebelling against the British Colonial Administration to actively join the Boer commandos.
