About Bethulie Boer War Concentration Camp Monument

The Bethulie Boer War Concentration Camp Monument (known locally as the Kamp Kerkhof) is a solemn memorial site that honours the 1,737 women and children who died in the camp between 1901 and 1902. Often described as the "archetypal bad camp" or "hell camp," it was notorious for its extreme overcrowding and high mortality rate caused by disease and starvation. The current site is a relocated cemetery. In the 1960s, the original graves were moved from their site near the river to higher ground to prevent them from being submerged by the construction of the Gariep Dam. Garden of Remembrance: A sprawling area with long granite slabs inscribed with the names of all the victims. The Angel Statue: A statue of an angel stands sentinel over the reburied remains.
