About Bloemfontein White Horse

The Bloemfontein White Horse is a historic landmark consisting of white-painted stones on the eastern slopes of Naval Hill. It was constructed during the Anglo-Boer War (around 1900) as a directional beacon for British cavalry and horsemen returning to the remount camp at the foot of the hill. Dimensions: The horse is approximately 20 metres long and 12 metres high. Origin: It was most likely built by the 2nd Battalion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment. It is notable for being the only "Wiltshire-style" white horse hill figure located outside of Wiltshire, England. Heritage Status: It was declared a National Monument on 15 October 1982 and is currently a provincial heritage site.
