About Sarel Cilliers Monument
Charl (Sarel) Arnoldus Cilliers (1801–1871) was a Voortrekker leader and preacher who, alongside Andries Pretorius, guided the Boers to victory over the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838; he is especially remembered for leading the Voortrekkers in a solemn vow to God, pledging that if granted protection and triumph, they would build a church and commemorate the day as an annual Sabbath, a tradition to be honoured by their descendants.
