About Coalbrook Mining Disaster Monument 2
The Coalbrook Mining Disaster Monument is located in Holly Country (formerly the Coalbrook Mining Village) near Sasolburg, Free State. It commemorates the 437 miners who died on 21 January 1960 in South Africa's worst mining disaster. Cause: A cascading failure of approximately 900 underground pillars, which caved in nearly 180 metres below the surface. Location: The mine was situated approximately 21km south-west of Vereeniging.
