About Afrikaans Language Monument
The Afrikaans Language Monument in Welkom, Free State, was actually the first monument in South Africa dedicated to the Afrikaans language. While the more famous, larger monument is located in Paarl, Western Cape, the Welkom monument was built in 1959 to honour the language. Significance: It is the first Afrikaans language monument in South Africa, preceding the iconic Paarl monument which was only inaugurated in 1975. Designers: The monument was designed by Gerhard Olivier, with architectural plans drawn up by Leon Roodt.
