About Eland Sculpture

The Eland sculpture is a landmark public artwork located at the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein. Artist: It was conceptualised and designed by renowned South African contemporary artist Clive van den Berg. Specifications: The sculpture stands approximately 5.5 metres high and is constructed from 20 tons of cast concrete. The sculpture serves as a symbolic "gateway" to the inner city. Van den Berg intended the work to represent a majestic animal that has long since disappeared from the urban landscape, prompting reflection on our relationship with the past and the environment. It also references the spiritual and cultural significance of the eland to the San people, South Africa's earliest inhabitants.
