About Flame of Democracy

The flame serves as a powerful symbol of South Africa’s journey toward freedom, equality, and human rights. It is a constant reminder to all citizens of their right to live a life completely free from injustice and oppression. The Lighting: Former President Nelson Mandela originally lit the flame at his home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape. It was transported over a thousand kilometers to Johannesburg inside a special container. The Anniversary: The flame was officially lit at its permanent home on 10 December 2011. This special event marked the 15th anniversary of the signing of South Africa's democratic Constitution. It has been burning continuously ever since.
