About Randjeslaagte Beacon
The Randjeslaagte Beacon is an important historical landmark in Johannesburg, South Africa. It marks the northernmost apex of the original triangular piece of land where the city of Johannesburg was founded following the 1886 gold rush. The Randjeslaagte Triangle: The city started on a piece of surplus government land ("uitvalgrond") measuring roughly 2.5 square kilometres. The Apex: The beacon defined the top point of this triangle, while the base ran along Commissioner Street. Evolution: Originally a white pole fixed in a rock cairn, it was later covered and smoothed over with concrete.Protection Status: It was officially declared a National Monument on 26 February 1965.
