About Anglo-Boer War Blockhouse | Witkop
The Witkop Blockhouse is a provincial heritage site and a significant relic of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). It is one of only about 50 masonry blockhouses still standing in South Africa from an original network of over 8,000 structures. ocation: Situated on a hill near Meyerton (approx. 30km south of Johannesburg) next to the R59 highway, close to an Engen Garage. Construction: Built in 1901 by British forces, often using black South African labour. Strategic Purpose: To protect the critical railway line between Vereeniging and Germiston (Elandsfontein) from Boer guerrilla attacks. Its position on the crest of the hill provided visibility as far as Johannesburg.
