About Voortrekker Monument

The Voortrekker Monument is a massive granite landmark in Pretoria that serves as a National Heritage Site commemorating the "Great Trek" of the 1830s. Designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk and inaugurated in 1949, the 40-meter-high Art Deco structure is famous for its Hall of Heroes, which contains the world's largest marble frieze depicting pioneer history. A key symbolic feature is the Cenotaph, which is annually illuminated by a single ray of sunlight at noon on December 16, striking the words "Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika" (We for Thee, South Africa). Surrounded by a granite wall of 64 ox-wagons and set within a nature reserve, the site remains one of South Africa’s most visited cultural attractions, offering a museum, hiking trails, and panoramic views of the capital.
