About Churchill Memorial

The Churchill Memorial in Frere, KwaZulu-Natal, marks the site of the famous Armoured Train Incident of 15 November 1899 during the Anglo-Boer War. At this location, Boer forces ambushed a British reconnaissance train, leading to the capture of a 25-year-old Winston Churchill, who was then serving as a war correspondent for the Morning Post. Significance: The site commemorates where the train was derailed by rocks placed on the tracks. Churchill’s actions—bravely assisting in clearing the line to allow the locomotive and wounded to escape—later became a cornerstone of his legendary reputation.
