Major General Sir Edward Woodgate was mortally wounded on the summit of Spion Kop during the Battle of Spion Kop on 24 January 1900. Context: Woodgate was leading the 11th Brigade in a night assault to capture the strategic hill. The Injury: On the morning of 24 January, around 08:30 hrs, a shell splinter struck him in the head above the right eye, causing a severe brain injury.
