The Isandlwana Battlefield, located in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is the historical site of the first major clash of the Anglo-Zulu War on 22 January 1879. During the engagement, a disciplined Zulu army of approximately 20,000 warriors deployed their traditional "horns of the buffalo" tactical formation to encircle and decisively defeat a British force of roughly 1,800 troops. The battle resulted in the loss of over 1,300 British and colonial soldiers, making it one of the most significant military defeats suffered by the British Empire against an indigenous force. Today, the location operates as an open-air museum and memorial site managed under provincial heritage authorities, featuring a distinctive sphinx-shaped hill, white stone cairns marking mass graves, and an on-site interpretive center that houses historical artifacts and educational exhibits for visitors.
