About Patent Slipway - Landmark
The slipway dates back to 1862 and is still in use. It is now part of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. For more than 100 years ships were winched out of the water to work on their hulls. In 1972 the winch was replaced by a synchrolift. A moveable platform which lift the ship to ground level. The system is currently mainly used to refit large foreign trawlers.
