About Ingrid Jonker Memorial

The Ingrid Jonker Memorial is a commemorative sculpture located on the beachfront in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town, dedicated to the iconic South African poet Ingrid Jonker. Unveiled in 2006 as part of the Sunday Times Heritage Project, the monument marks the area where Jonker spent some of her happiest childhood years. Created by Cape Town artist Tyrone Appollis, the sculpture is deeply symbolic of Jonker's most famous work, the anti-apartheid poem "Die Kind" (The Child). Symbolism: The tricycle represents the "child who just wanted to play in the sun," a direct reference to the child shot dead by police in Nyanga in 1960, who became a central figure in her poetry.
