About The Timber Shed

The Dutch East India Company (VOC) ordered the construction of the Old Timber Shed in Plettenberg Bay in August 1786 to store timber before shipping it to Cape Town. Completed by 1788, it is among the oldest historical structures on the Western Cape's southeastern coast and was designated a National Monument on September 11, 1936. The Van Plettenberg Historical Society is undertaking revitalization efforts to preserve the currently ruined structure as a heritage hub and museum. More information is available from the Van Plettenberg Historical Society.
