About The Big Tree
The Big Tree in Hogsback is a magnificent Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus) nestled deep within the indigenous Tyume Forest of the Amathole Mountains. Also known as the "Eastern Cape Monarch," it stands as the largest tree in the Eastern Cape province. The Big Tree is estimated to be approximately 800 years old. Located within the Tyume Forest stands at a height of nearly 38 metres. It serves as a vital natural habitat for local birdlife, including the endangered Cape Parrot, and can be accessed by visitors via a 1.7-kilometre hiking trail.
