About Tower of Light
Built in 1936, it was a centerpiece of the Empire Exhibition, a massive event held at Milner Park to celebrate Johannesburg's 50th jubilee. It was the first structure in South Africa built using sliding shuttering, a construction method where concrete forms are moved upward continuously. Standing 45 metres (150 feet) tall, it was designed by Geoffrey Pearse, the first Professor of Architecture at Wits.
