The Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is an 11.8-hectare urban nature reserve in the Nieuw Muckleneuk suburb of Pretoria. Named after the famous South African ornithologist J. Austin Roberts, it provides a protected habitat for over 170 bird species, including the national bird of South Africa, the Blue Crane. Diverse Wildlife: Beyond birds like the Grey Crowned Crane and Sacred Ibis, the sanctuary is home to small mammals like blesbok, duiker, and steenbok. Best Timing: Visit during the early morning or late afternoon for the highest bird activity and better photography lighting. Security: While security has been improved with new fencing and a mandatory sign-in process, visitors are still advised to be mindful of their vehicles in the parking lot.
