About Redan Rock Art Site

he Redan rock art site near Vereeniging in Gauteng is a major, unique heritage location featuring over 270 engraved images, primarily abstract, circular, and geometric, pecked into a sandstone outcrop. While not scientifically dated, similar engravings in the region range from 150 to 8400 years old. These petroglyphs are often associated with surrounding Late Iron Age (ca. 1500-1800) sites in the Sedibeng District, which contain stone kraals, dwellings, and iron/copper artifacts. The site is situated on the Kookfontein 545 IQ farm in the Sedibeng District, between Meyerton and Vereeniging. It lies roughly one mile north of the old Redan Post Office and is bordered by a small stream that flows into the Klip River. Access Point: Visitors typically park at the Springfield Secondary School on the R61. Permit Status: Because the engravings are located on private mining property (currently owned by Ocon Bricks), the site is not open for walk-in visitors. Entry is generally restricted to pre-arranged educational tours or archaeological outings, such as those organised by the South African Archaeological Society or the Vaal Teknorama Museum.
