Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall
About Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall
The Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall is a prominent natural feature located in the Karkloof region of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, South Africa. It plunges approximately 101 metres over steep dolerite cliffs into a valley below. Reaching the summit requires an arduous, steep, and often overgrown hike that begins at Shawswood Farm and passes upward through a dense canopy of indigenous mistbelt forest.
At the top, the terrain transitions into an expansive grassland plateau where the feeding river forms a shallow cascade and clear rock pools. This elevated vantage point provides unobstructed, panoramic views across the Karkloof valley toward Mount Gilboa, the second-highest peak in the Midlands. Access to the trail is managed via the private farm property, which requires a standard day-visitor entry fee.
