About Leisure Bay Firefly Sanctuary
The Leisure Bay Firefly Sanctuary is a unique conservation area in South Africa, recognized as the first firefly sanctuary in Africa and one of only a few in the world. Established in 2020 by the Leisure Bay Conservancy, it protects a critical wetland habitat that is home to a high concentration of fireflies. Location: Situated at the bottom of Torquay Avenue, adjacent to the Kidd's Beach and Peter Pan Beach parking area in Leisure Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. Best Time to Visit: The fireflies are most active on warm, still summer nights. Visitors typically gather at sundown and into the early evening to witness the bioluminescence. Hours: While the site is generally accessible 24 hours, the best viewing window is shortly after dusk.
