About Kwena Dam
Kwena Dam is an arch-gravity type dam located on the Crocodile River near Lydenburg (Mashishing) in the Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Established in 1984 and initially named the Braam Raubenheimer Dam, the structure features a wall height of 50 metres and a reservoir capacity of approximately 160.8 million cubic metres.
Managed under the Inkomati-Usuthu water management area, its primary functions are to provide municipal drinking water and sustain critical agricultural irrigation for the downstream Lowveld region. Beyond its utility infrastructure, the dam basin serves as a regional venue for freshwater angling, boating, and lakeside camping at the adjacent Kwena Dam Resort.
