Points of Interest

Orpen Dam Lookout Point

Kruger National Park, MpumalangaThe Orpen Dam Lookout Point is an official, unfenced viewpoint located in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, deep within the south-central region of Kruger National Park. Situated along the S32 loop road just north of the N'waswitsontso River, the site sits roughly 10 kilometers north-east of the Tshokwane Picnic Site and acts as a central stopping point between the Skukuza and Satara rest camps. The viewpoint features a covered wooden gazebo structure, a stone-walled viewing deck overlooking the dam, a parking area that accommodates roughly seven to eight vehicles, and basic restroom facilities. It is geographically distinct from the Orpen Rest Camp and Orpen Gate, which are located further northwest near the Limpopo border; instead, this specific lookout point provides elevated views of wildlife congregating at the Orpen Dam reservoir within the Mpumalanga section of the park.View details →

Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site

Kruger National Park, MpumalangaThe Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site is a historic, concession-run rest stop situated along the H1-2 main road in the southern-central region of Kruger National Park, South Africa. Established originally as a ranger post in 1928 under the direction of the park's first warden, James Stevenson-Hamilton, the site is named after Chokwane, a local Shangaan chief and medicine man. Centered around a prominent, mature sausage tree that grows through a thatched canopy, the facility provides day visitors with an open-air dining area equipped with wooden picnic benches, a curio and souvenir shop, and public restroom facilities. The on-site cafe sells regional food items, including venison pies, traditional roosterkoek cooked over open flames, and local snacks, while also offering skottel braai (gas frying pan) rentals for visitors wishing to cook their own meals. Because the site is unfenced and integrated into the natural environment, it is routinely frequented by local wildlife, particularly troops of vervet monkeys and baboons that scavenge for food around the picnic tables.View details →

Nkumbe View Site

Kruger National Park, MpumalangaThe Nkumbe View Site is an elevated lookout point located on a prominent ridge along the H10 main road in the southern-central region of Kruger National Park, South Africa. Positioned roughly 35 kilometres north of the Lower Sabie Rest Camp and approximately 8 kilometres south of the Tshokwane Picnic Site, this location features a small parking area and a thatched-roof wooden shelter equipped with concrete seating. Because it rises about 130 metres above the surrounding landscape, the site offers an expansive, westward-facing panoramic view over the lower-lying savanna plains toward the distant Mpumalanga Drakensberg mountains. As a designated get-out point, visitors are legally permitted to exit their vehicles within the immediate lookout area to rest and scan the plains below for regional wildlife, such as elephants, zebras, and wildebeest, using binoculars or cameras.View details →
