About Gondolin Cave

Gondolin Cave is a fossil-rich, dolomitic paleocave system located in the Northwest Province of South Africa. It forms part of the northwestern edge of the famous Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discovered by modern researchers in the late 1970s, it is the only described hominin-bearing fossil site within the Northwest Province section of the heritage region. Location: The cave is situated roughly 50 kilometres north-northwest of Johannesburg. It lies about 18 kilometres east of other major fossil hubs like Sterkfontein and Kromdraai. Access: The site sits entirely on privately owned land and is heavily protected. It is closed to the general public to preserve ongoing research.
