About Die Hond van Hondeklipbaai
The Dog of Hondeklip Bay (known in Afrikaans as Die Hond van Hondeklipbaai) is a historical, natural rock formation located on the South African West Coast that gave the fishing village of Hondeklip Bay its name. In 1846, ship captain Thomas Grace identified the formation which originally stood approximately five meters tall and closely resembled a sitting dog while surveying the inlet to establish a harbor for exporting copper ore from Namaqualand. Although the resemblance is less distinct today because the rock's "head" was struck and severed by lightning years ago, the coastal formation remains a prominent geological landmark that anchors the town's maritime history and tourist identity.
