About Arniston Monument

The Arniston Monument in the Western Cape, South Africa, commemorates the 1815 wreck of the British East Indiaman Arniston, where 372 people died. Located in the coastal village of Waenhuiskrans (renamed Arniston), the monument was erected to honor the tragic loss, with only six survivors found. The Shipwreck: The Arniston sank on May 30, 1815, after separating from its fleet during a storm and striking reefs. The Monument: A monument was originally erected in 1817; a new, similar version was constructed in 2010 by Robert Haarburger to honor the victims.
