About Die Baken
Die Baken (also known as the Struispoint Beacon) is a historic landmark and popular hiking destination located about 2.5 km south of the coastal village of Arniston (Waenhuiskrans). Purpose: The beacon is a concrete obelisk built to warn ships of the dangerous Saxon Reef, which extends three miles into the sea and has caused at least 14 shipwrecks. Appearance: Built around 1900 from local stone, it is traditionally painted with red stripes for high visibility against the white dunes.
