About Devil’s Peak

Devil's Peak (Duiwelspiek) is an iconic, 1,000-metre high mountain peak in Cape Town, South Africa, forming the eastern flank of the Table Mountain amphitheatre. It is renowned for its spectacular panoramic views of the City Bowl, Table Bay, and the Hottentots Holland mountains. The Legend of the Name: The peak's name comes from a famous local legend involving a retired Dutch pirate named Jan van Hunks. According to folklore, Van Hunks was a heavy smoker who once engaged in a pipe-smoking contest with a mysterious stranger who turned out to be the devil. The massive clouds that frequently cover the mountain—often referred to as the "tablecloth"—are said to be the smoke from their eternal duel.
