About ET Rock Formation - (Painted Green since 1999)
Situated prominently along the mountain side of the R44 (Clarence Drive) just outside Pringle Bay, the ET Rock Formation is one of the most whimsical, beloved, and iconic roadside anomalies on the False Bay coastline. This natural Table Mountain Sandstone boulder features an uncanny silhouette that perfectly mirrors the large-headed, elongated neck profile of the famous Hollywood extraterrestrial from Steven Spielberg's 1982 film. Adding to its legendary status, local pranksters painted the rock a vibrant, unmistakable bright green in 1999, transforming it into a permanent, highly celebrated geographical landmark. For over two decades, this cheeky piece of coastal street art has served as a joyful "look-out-for" milestone for road-trippers, children, and daily commuters navigating the scenic curves between Rooi-Els and Pringle Bay.
