About Old Cape Point Lighthouse Landmark

The Old Cape Point Lighthouse, completed in 1859 and first lit on 1 May 1860, is a historic stone and cast-iron tower standing at the highest point of the Cape Peninsula. Perched 238–249 metres above sea level on Da Gama Peak, it once served as a critical navigational landmark before being decommissioned in 1919 due to visibility issues. Operational Years: The lighthouse was active for nearly 60 years (1860–1919). Visibility Flaw: Its high elevation was its downfall; the light was frequently shrouded in low-hanging clouds and thick fog for up to 900 hours a year.
