The Pier Head Chess Board is a giant outdoor chess board created as part of the V&A’s Waterfront’s development strategy to energize the space between buildings. There are several smaller chess games built into the outdoor tables surrounding the Chess Board, so passing onlookers can participate in a more intimate game. But chess is not the only thing on offer – there is also a boules court and the Kids Ahoy Playground in the square, with regular face painters, stilt walkers, marimba bands and balloon sculptors keeping the air festive.
