About Hottentots-Holland

The Hottentots-Holland mountain range and its corresponding Nature Reserve form a 70,000-hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site located approximately 90 km southeast of Cape Town. The area is a major conservation hub for mountain fynbos, housing over 1,300 plant species and serving as a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Historically called the "Mountains of Africa" by early Dutch settlers, it was later renamed because the Khoikhoi (referred to as "Hottentots" by settlers) regarded the fertile valley as their "Holland" or fatherland. The Gantouws Pass contains ancient ox-wagon tracks carved into the rock, which are now protected national monuments. Main Entrance: Located at Nuweberg in Viljoen’s Pass (R321) between Grabouw and Villiersdorp.
