About Dalene Matthee Big Tree & Memorial

The Dalene Matthee Big Tree & Memorial is a commemorative site located at Krisjan-se-Nek in the Millwood Forest of the Garden Route National Park. It honours the celebrated South African author Dalene Matthee (1938–2005), whose "Forest Novels" brought international attention to the Knysna forest and its conservation. The Big Tree: An ancient Outeniqua Yellowwood (Afrocarpus falcatus) estimated to be over 880 years old and standing 40 metres tall. It was officially renamed in Matthee's honour during the memorial's unveiling.
