The Slangkop Point Lighthouse is South Africa’s tallest cast-iron lighthouse, standing 33 metres (approximately 108 feet) high. Located on the coastline of Kommetjie near Cape Town, it was commissioned in 1914 but only completed in 1919 due to delays caused by World War I. Construction: The tower is made of 272 cast-iron segments, each weighing roughly 500kg, which were manufactured in England and bolted together on-site. The Light: Its powerful electric light flashes four times every 30 seconds and is visible up to 33 nautical miles out to sea. Heritage: It is a protected site under the National Heritage Resources Act and forms part of the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area. Fees: Approximately *R16.00 for adults and *R8.00 for children under 12. Tours: Visitors can climb the 144 steps of the internal spiral staircase to the lantern room for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Peninsula.
