Munros Beach, located within Munro Bay in Mossel Bay, is widely recognized as the site where Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias made landfall on 3 February 1488. This historic event marked the first documented contact between European navigators and the indigenous Khoisan people of Southern Africa, officially opening the maritime route around the southern tip of Africa. The Landfall: Dias originally named the area Angra dos Vaqueiros (Bay of Cowherds) because of the local Khoisan herders they observed, later designating the wider area Aguada de São Brás (Watering Place of Saint Blaise). Freshwater Spring: The primary reason for landing here was a natural freshwater spring where the crew replenished their supplies. This spring still exists today within the local museum grounds.
